About Marianne

The Quiet Beauty of Handmade Crafting Moments in Clay

Since I was 12 years old, I have worked in clay. For over 25 years I have been a full-time potter in Kentucky and teaching in clay for almost as long. I have worked with both children and adults at the Living Arts and Science Center in Lexington, KY for 17 years and now at Broadway Clay in Frankfort, Ky.

I hold a BFA in ceramics and spent one summer working as a teacher’s aid at Penland School of Craft. I am a juried member of the Kentucky Art Council’s Kentucky Crafted, the Kentucky Guild of Artists and Craftsmen and the Indiana Artisan Marketplace.

We combine ancient stamping techniques with modern minimalism to create pieces that aren’t just objects, but soulful additions to your home.

The Process

Marianne Brown Pottery

Once the clay is ready to use, I create my pottery in 6 key steps. I throw, decorate and trim it; then I fire, glaze and fire again. Before using the clay on the wheel air bubbles need to be removed and the moisture evened out. After each piece is thrown on the wheel it is left out to dry some. Then I decorate the work. This is what makes my pottery unique. The decoration is done with one or more tools, my stamps, that I have made from the same clay that I use to make the pottery. The stamps are rolled or pressed into the work. Often, I will use a collection of them to create a landscape or picture.

When a piece is about halfway dry and stiff, I trim any extra clay off the bottom. Once an entire batch of pottery is dry (making pottery is like making cookies, several dozen at a time are made) it is fired to a low temperature, then glazed and fired to a much higher temperature. Each batch of pottery is between 200 – 400 pieces and will take 8- 10 weeks to complete. This is what makes each piece a one of a kind. When the pottery is finished all of it is both food safe and dishwasher safe.

Testimonials

Real stories from our community of art lovers and ceramic enthusiasts who have brought a piece of Marianne Brown Pottery  into their homes.

Very cute gallery, reasonable prices. The owner /artists was there. She explained regarding some of the items on display. Had a sale, ended up buying a gorgeous blue bowl for my desk

Wonderful work, very attractive to display, but also very functionable. The larger pieces make wonderful center pieces on your table or in a lighted book shelf.
